I wish I had saved and email from our Local VA director about when the first thanksgiving was actually acknowledged and celebrated in the US. It was Dec 18 1777 when it was officially demanded by continental congress and George Washington and his troops had won a battle and captured British troops this for a celebration of thanks to God for the victory. It wasn't until 1863 that President Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday of November to be Thanksgiving. But it was not to celebrate the pilgrims, it was to celebrate giving thanks for families and the soldiers that could not be home with them. Please give thanks for our troops thank cannot be with their families and their sacrifices for our freedom. That is what we should be thankful for.
